Energy / data centers — Sweetwater cleared one provisional grid screen, not the finish line

IREN says its 2GW Sweetwater Hub—1.4GW at Sweetwater 1 and 600MW at Sweetwater 2—has been conditionally included as Base Load in ERCOT’s Batch Zero process.

TODAY'S SIGNAL

IREN says its 2GW Sweetwater Hub—1.4GW at Sweetwater 1 and 600MW at Sweetwater 2—has been conditionally included as Base Load in ERCOT’s Batch Zero process. The company says Sweetwater 1’s high-voltage substation was energized earlier this year and 300MW of construction continues toward a fourth-quarter 2027 target.

This is more concrete than an undifferentiated pipeline announcement, but it is not final interconnection approval or 2GW of contractor backlog. ERCOT describes Batch Zero classifications as provisional, with conditions that can include verification, model data or a good-cause exception; failure to satisfy an applicable condition can disqualify a project.

For Texas contractors, the useful distinction is between a named project with active construction and provisional grid status, and a fully approved, contracted opportunity. This evidence supports the first—not the second.

The honest limit

The IREN item is a company-authored announcement with developer/investor, financing and promotional interests; ERCOT is the independent process authority, not project-specific confirmation.

WHAT TO WATCH

Which conditions attach to Sweetwater and whether they are satisfied on schedule. A final grid-connection agreement or other non-provisional ERCOT milestone. Customer, contractor and subcontract awards plus cost or margin evidence. Whether the first 300MW remains on track for the fourth quarter of 2027.
